Brief History

Through the Faculty of Arts, the University officially launched the Korean Studies Programme, one of its 2013-2014 visions 2030 flagship project on Friday, 14th February, 2014.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha, Prof. Peter K’Obonyo, Deputy Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), thanked the Korean High commission in Kenya and the entire Korean community for supporting the Korean programmes at the University. He noted that such initiatives are geared towards empowering young Kenyans and making them part of the journey towards realizing Vision 2030.

While presiding over the ceremony, the Korean Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Chan-Woo Kim, said that the launch of the Korean Studies Programme was a clear demonstration of the good relationship between Kenya and South Korea. He thanked the University management for their passionate support in making sure that the Korean programme was officially launched.

The culmination of the event saw the presentation of awards to the top ten 2013 essay competition winners out of the 162 entries. The first winner got Kshs. 40,000; the second Kshs. 30,000.00 while the third got Kshs. 20,000.00. The participants were also issued with a certificate of recognition for having participated in the essay competition. While congratulating the participants for their achievements the Chief Guest, H.E Chan-Woo Kim noted that this a positive sign of interest in Korean language and culture. Mr. Kim also presented a personal award to the top ten winners.

The ceremony was attended by among others, the Deputy Korean Ambassador to Kenya H.E Ki-Jun You, the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Preston Chitere, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Korean Studies Coordinator, Prof. P. Wasamba, Dr. Jane Oduor, Department of Linguistics and Languages and other representatives from Korean Embassy and UON Departments.
